Kontron Releases MECs for Flexible Application Deployment

Premier turnkey COTS are designed for use in defense, aerospace, and avionics applications.

| Published July 1, 2008

Kontron (Poway, CA) unveiled the Kontron MEC-PPC-AV1, a rugged Modular Embedded Computer (MEC) specifically targeted towards avionics applications. The Kontron MEC-PPC-AV1 is a low-cost 3U CompactPCI (CPCI) COTS subsystem designed to exceed requirements through its compact dimensions, low-power dissipation, and real-time software with a very large I/O offering.

It is targeted towards the avionics market because of its ATR footprint dimensions, 28VDC power supply, lightweight structure in aluminium, conduction cooled dissipation, MIL-STD-1553 links, MIL-C-38999 connectors and a very low power consumption of less than 17W. It hosts a Kontron 3U CompactPCI Single-Slot PowerEngineC7 Embedded Computer, a low-power dissipation and high performance processor board already embedded in major avionics programs.

The Kontron PowerEngineC7 is based on the PowerPC G3 750FX RISC CPU, which includes 512KB internal L2 cache, and the Marvel Discovery III MV64460 Integrated System Controller. It offers an extensive range of standard functions and expansion options. The PowerEngineC7 can be used both as a system slot or a peripheral slot processor board. The Kontron MEC comes as a turnkey system with preloaded VxWorks 6.2.

Kontron also presented its ITC-320 series features multiple Gigabit Ethernet, SATA-15O, USB and PCI-Express ports and provides -40 degrees C to +85 degrees C operation in harsh environments. The Rugged Conduction-Cooled (RC) version of the Kontron ITC-320 series, a range of 3U CompactPCI CPU boards using a high performance and long-term available processing chipset from the Intel embedded architecture. The series features three types of top performance single and dual-core Intel processors in four different designs, including a Rugged Conduction-Cooled version for reliable operation in even the harshest environments. Equipped with the latest dual-core 1.5GHz Intel Core2 Duo LV processor, the Kontron ITC-320 CompactPCI CPU board is able to meet highly demanding signal and data processing requirements. Using the 1.2GHz Intel Core Duo processor on the Kontron ITC-320 provides the optimal performance-per-watt ratio for applications that need to balance computing performance with low power consumption. The Kontron ITC-320 series also supports the 1.0 GHz Intel Celeron M processor.

The Rugged Conduction-Cooled (RC) version of the Kontron ITC-320 series of CompactPCI CPU boards enlarges the application range of the product for harsh environments. The RC design supports operational temperatures ranging from –40 degrees C to +85 degrees C according to VITA 47 recommendations. It uses the same Printed Circuit Board as the commercially built product in order to guarantee full binary compatibility between versions.
